Hi, it's Carolyn Beam. What little girl doesn't like to add a cute barrette or hair tie to her hair? With the GO! Me, girls can make adorable barrettes or hair ties to match their outfits and to give to their friends. They're fun to make and work up quickly with the GO! Me!
Both the barrette and hair tie are made with felt which can be found in craft supply stores in 9" x 12" pieces. One piece in different colors is sufficient to make several accessories, or scraps can be used as well for these kid-friendly crafts.
Heart Barrette
Fabric:
Red felt (or color of your choice)
Supplies Needed:
GO! Me Owl Accessories 55675 (included with the GO! Me Owl 55333)
Additional Supplies Needed:
1 barrette
1 2-hole button—1/2" diameter
Embroidery floss
Embroidery needle
Precut as follows:
Red: Precut 2—1 3/4" x 2 1/4" rectangles. Cut 2 hearts.
Sewing Directions:
- Lay the 2 hearts on top of each other. Use a hand blanket stitch to sew around the edges.
- Thread the needle and keeping the thread doubled, knot the end of the thread. Starting at the middle at the back of the hearts, bring the needle up through both hearts and then through one of the holes in the button. Bring the button down until it's sitting on top of the hearts. Stitch through the second buttonhole, through the hearts to the back.
- Place the open barrette on the back of the hearts. Wrap the thread around the barrette and stitch through the hearts and the button to the front. Stitch through the second buttonhole, down through the hearts to the back.
- Repeat this stitch, making sure to sew around the barrette with each stitch several more times to hold all the layers firmly in place.
Posy Hair Tie
Fabric:
Red and pink felt (or 2 colors of your choice)
Supplies Needed:
GO! Me Owl Accessories 55675 (included with the GO! Me Owl 55333)
Additional Supplies Needed:
1 hair tie
1 2-hole button—1/2" diameter
Embroidery floss
Embroidery needle
Precut as follows:
Red: Precut 1—2 1/2" x 2 1/2" square. Cut 1 flower.
Pink: Precut 1—2 1/2" x 2 1/2" square. Cut 1 flower.
Sewing Directions:
- Lay the two flowers on top of each other, offsetting them so you can see both flowers.
- Thread the needle and keeping the thread doubled, knot the end of the thread. Starting at the middle at the back of the flowers, bring the needle up through both flowers and then through one of the holes in the button. Bring the needle down until it's sitting on top of the flowers. Stitch through the second buttonhole, through the flowers to the back.
- Place the hair twist on the back of the flowers. Wrap the thread around the hair twist and stitch through the flowers and the button to the front. Stitch through the second buttonhole, down through the flowers to the back.
- Repeat this stitch, making sure to sew around the hair tie with each stitch several more times to hold all of the layers firmly in place.
