Patriotic National Holidays in the United States

Presidents' Day - The Third Monday in Feb.

  • Until the mid-1970s, the Feb. 22 birthday of George Washington was a national holiday. Abraham Lincoln's February 12 birthday was also a holiday in most states. The two celebrations have been joined into one, and the holiday has been expanded to include all past presidents.

Memorial Day -  The Last Monday in May

  • This holiday honors and remembers those who have died. It originally honored the dead of the Civil War. It is now considered a day to remember the dead of all wars and the dead in general.

The Fourth of July or Independence Day - July 4

  • July 4 is the celebration of the United States' birthday and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. It is widely marked by picnics, fireworks and the flying of the American flag.

Patriot Day - September 11

  • September 11 was designated as Patriot Day in 2001 in honor of those who lost their lives in the attacks of September 11, 2001.  Government facilities are directed to fly the flag at half-mast on Patriot Day. In addition, the President calls upon all Americans to display the flag at half-staff from their homes on that day and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the victims of the attacks.

Veterans Day - November 11

  • Veterans Days was originally called Armistice Day and was created to honor Americans who served in World War I. It now honors the veterans of all the wars the United States has fought in.
