Combine a BOB & GO! Qube: Morning Star Medallion

Hey AccuQuilters! I’m Lori from Lori Miller Designs here to share the fun project I have been working on. I combined a BOB with a Qube! The Block on Board was the very fun GO! Morning Star-12" Finished die (55556). I then used the kite die shapes from the GO! Qube 12” Block Companion Set-Angles (55791) for the alternating blocks. The resulting graphic throw quilt creates clever medallion shapes with a striking Morning Star center.

This throw quilt finishes at 48½” x 60½”.

Fabrics

I went through my stash and found some complimentary colors. A fun dark reddish purple, a mustard yellow and light purple to add interest. The background white and the yellow have cute little numbers printed on them.

 

I used EQ8 Quilt design software to virtually design and see the color placement on this Morning Star Medallion throw quilt.

 

Cutting

I counted my quilt blocks and pieces and started cranking out the die cut shapes. I also used a five color scheme for my Morning Star block. You can find block assembly instructions for the block, including a five-color version available from AccuQuilt.

Kite Blocks

Make seven blocks. And six half blocks

• Binding: ½ yd Dark Purple, cut into six strips with the 2¼" strip cutter.
• Batting: 56” x 68”
• Backing: 56” x 68”

 

Block and Quilt Assembly

 

The crisp accurate pieces made pulling these BOB Morning Star blocks together so much easier. The assembly instructions that AccuQuilt provides gives you a step by step flow to help put them together with groups of triangles.

 

I assembled them with a lot of string piecing. The extra white background side pieces were created by adding the two dark purple “B” Corners to one edge which will finish the medallion look on the sides instead of using a partial Morning star block.

 

Once the Morning star blocks were assembled, I pieced the Kite blocks that I had cut with my AccuQuilt GO! Qube 12” dies 14 and 15.

 

I used my lovely design wall to layout the quilt design. If you look closely, the Kite blocks and the corners of the Morning Star block don't match exactly, they have little tails on them. I think they look great creating that circular morning star medallion with a funky edge.

 

Quilt as desired. I used a combination of straight line and free motion quilting to add texture and detail. Join together and bind the quilt using the 2¼" strips.
